Red Wine 11/X Pinot Noir de Capçanes 2016
Single varietal Pinot Noir from DO Catalunya aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Availability: Out of stock
This the new vintage - the 11th one already - of a most unconventional Spanish red wine, a varietal Pinot Noir made from grapes coming from a single plot planted in the year 2002 in Montsant. Located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, the soils are composed mainly of clay and the yields are extremely low.
Produce by Celler de Capçanes, Pinot Noir de Capçanes was harvested by hand at the beginning of September. After a meticulous selection process on site and in the cellar, the grapes were macerated and fermented in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts.
After that, this red wine from Montsant underwent malolactic fermentation in 300-litre French oak barrels. Finally, it was aged for 12 months in the barrels, clarified with egg whites, and bottled unfiltered.
Since Pinot Noir is not recognized as an authorized grape by the DO Montsant, this Crianza red wine bears the label DO Catalunya.

Drink until 2025.
A very rare wine indeed. Only 800 bottles produced.
Appearance | The red wine Pinot Noir de Capçanes has a bright cherry colour with some garnet tinges. |
---|---|
Nose | An unexpected mixture of sheer Pinot Noir sophistication and Mediterranean liveliness. Juicy red fruid and black cherry fruit preserve, nuanced by aromas of tobacco, vanilla, balsam, blue flowers and toast. On the background, rich suggestions of underbrush, mineral and dry earth. |
Palate | This varietal red wine by Celler de Capçanes is joyful, smooth and intense. This Mediterranean Pinot Noir contrasts starkly with the Pinots from Burgundy or New Zealand, which usually have a much more restrained and autumnal character. Here we find very pure notions of fruit, some deep mineral and earthy intimations and a dash of garrigue and Mediterranean aromatic herbs. Good acidity, well-rounded tannins and long finish. |
Our personal opinion | Something of an oddity, but a very good wine in its own right, 11/X Pinot Noir de Capçanes 2016 pairs wonderfully with meat, and also with oily fishes. |
