Celler de Capçanes

The spirit of Montsant.
One of the most important wine coops in south Catalonia, bodega Celler de Capçanes is located in the
namesake village, in the southern tip of the DO Montsant. The company was founded by five local
families in 1933, and during its first five decades of existence it was focused on the production of bulk
wine.
In the early 1990s, bodega Celler de Capçanes began making wines aged in oak barrels, and soon
afterwards, in 1995, the winery made one of the first Spanish Kosher wines at the request of the
Barcelona Jewish Community. An immediate commercial and critical success, the red wine Peraj
Ha’abib – Flor de Primavera made the winery known outside of Spain and opened the doors of the
international market. To answer the growing demand, the managing team undertook an upgrade of the
facilities, modernized the winemaking methods and redesigned the product portfolio.
Nowadays, the wine coop Celler de Capçanes has 81 members, which collectively own around 210
hectares of vineyards, a significant portion of which are organically certified. Situated near the village of
Capçanes and sheltered by Serra de Llaberia (the Llaberia mountaing range), the vineyards of bodega
Celler de Capçanes have four main kinds of soils: clay, llicorella (slate), limestone and panal (fossilized
dunes).
The Celler de Capçanes winery grows several grape varieties, most notably Grenache and Carignan, the
most widely planted red varieties in the Montsant region, which can be up to 110 years of age. The main
local white varieties are White Grenache and Grey Grenache, and the winery also cultivates international
varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah, which typically used for the entry and mid-level red blends.
The wide product portfolio of bodega Celler de Capçanes is made under the technical supervision of the
impressively talented youn Catalan oenologist Anna Rovira, whose professional capacity has already
been recognized with several Spanish and international awards, particularly in Germany. Besides the
Kosher wine range (Lepesaj and Mevushal), which currently accounts for 10% of the overall
production, the wine portfolio of bodega Celler de Capçanes is comprised of vermouth, sweet wines,
young wines, Crianzas like Vall del Calàs or Costers del Gravet, skin-contact whites like Mas Tortó
Brisat, Blanc de Noir wines like Vimblanc, and varietal old-vines like the red wine Cabrida, one of the
most elegant Grenache wines from southern Catalonia.
The yearly production of the Celler de Capçanes winery is in the region of 1 milion bottles, 65% of
which are exported to over 45 countries around the world.
