Details

A high-end Spanish red wine from Ribera del Duero, the wine Carmelo Rodero Pago de Valtarreña is a varietal Tinta del País wine produced by Bodegas Rodero.

This single vineyard reserva red wine is made from over 50-year-old vines grown in sandy and rocky soils..

Harvested by hand and exactingly selected, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Then, this red wine from Ribera del Duero was transferred into 225-litre new and 2nd year French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for over a period of 24 months.

Produced only in exceptional vintages, the red wine Carmelo Rodero Pago de Valtarreña 2020 is a paragon of quality. All bottles are numbered.

Decant at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Carmelo Rodero Pago de Valtarreña is deep purple with a violet rim.

Nose

Impressively deep, serious and intense. This Tinta del País (aka Tempranillo) begins with some deep notes of undergrowth and dry earth, seguing into pristine aromas of blueberries, balsam, coffee, leather and toast. Threre is an ever-present, beating mineral background, and some echos of spices and flowers

Palate

Bold and information-rich, this wine of Bodegas Rodero shows amazing promise, announcing an impressive development over the next years. Intricate and multilayered, with a, so to speak, pressurized complexity that really needs some time to loosen up. Wonderfully suggestive notes of blackberry liquor, wet undergrowth, tobacco leaves and bitter cocoa, with a deep mineral core. Very long, complex finish.

Our personal opinion

The magnificent wine  Carmelo Rodero Pago de Valtarreña 2020 squares the circle. Powerful and suave. Complex and drinkable. All in all, a great wine.

I find many high-end Riberas to be too cocky and lacking refinement. This is a completely different animal. It is extremely reluctant to engage in conversation, but when it finally begins the words it utters are very interesting, becoming truly marvelous after several hours.

Peculiarly austere, almost melancholic, though immensely expressive at the same time. Paradoxical. Anyway, there is a lot to explore and to enjoy here.
