In May 2018, after 14 years mapping and studying the different terroirs of his vineyards, Josep Grau Viticultor released a series of five single-vineyard wines. His Premier Cru wines, so to speak.
Produced from organically farmed vineyards planted with 35 to 40-year-old vines, the red wine Figuerals is a part of that collection.
A varietal Samsó (Carignan) wine, the grapes are sorted solely from the vineyard of the same name, located in Serra d'Almos, in the southern area of DO Montsant. The vineyard is also the place of origin of another Spanish red wine: Figuerals Garnatxa.
Selected three times, the grapes went through alcoholic fermentation in a 2,000-litre Stockinger Austrian oak vat. After that, Figuerals Samsó 2017 was aged for 16 months in the vat.
Decant this red wine from Montsant 1 hour before drinking.
Only 2,600 bottles produced.
The red wine Figuerals Samsó is medium purple with some violet gleams.
Subtly mineral and rather complex, this varietal Carignan suggests redcurrants and blueberries, with hints of raw cocoa, red pepper, blue flowers and Mediterranean herbs over a mineral, gently toasted background.
This red wine from Josep Grau Viticultor is crisp and detailed. Vibrant fruit, concentrated yet delicate, with a rich texture and a superb acidity with some herbal and citrusy intimations. Excellent balance, with powdery tannins and a very long finish with a mineral and floral note. This is a compelling Crianza red wine.
