Details
The wine Garrigal Vinyes Velles is made from the oldest estate vineyards of bodega Castillo de Perelada, DO Empordà.
To mark the occasion, winemaker Delfí Sanahuja decided to break free from the tradition of overripe, generously oaked wines still prevalent in the region. A decision, we think, that will be welcomed by many aficionados.
Planted 80 years ago, the old Carignan vines are located in finca La Garriga, a vineyard composed of gravel and rocky soils with a clay layer beneath that retains moisture.
After a manual harvest with meticulous selection, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. After that, this Crianza red wine was aged for a brief period of time - 7 months – in used oak barrels (70%) and 3,800-litre vats (30%). After bottling, the red wine Garrigal Vinyes Velles 2023 was kept in the cellar for no less than 1 year before hitting the shelves.
We suggest aerating this red wine from Empordà before drinking.

| Nose | A far cry from the typically brooding examples of the variety, this old-vines Carignan is floral and bright, with crunchy berry fruit, a tad of spice, bitter cocoa, wild flowers, lavender and rosemary, showing off a charming, luminous Mediterranean wildness. |
| Palate | Structured and detailed, with effortless natural concentration and a nimble mid palate, remarkable freshness and a garrigue-ish note to the ripe black fruit. This wine from Castillo de Perelada winery has a superb acidity and a very long finish with an earthy and floral aftertaste. |
| Our personal opinion | The wine Garrigal Vinyes Velles 2023 seriously questions the assumption that top-shelf Empordà wines must be fruit bombs with a high ABV. It was long overdue! |
