Details

This is the new vintage of one of Gran Claustro, one of Catalonia's classiest red wines

Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Samsó (Carignan), the grapes come from several vineyards located in the rugged, windswept region of northern Empordà, an exceptional terroir located near the Catalan-French border.

Produced by Castillo de Perelada, the grapes were meticulously harvested and selected. Then this Spanish red wine was fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks.

After that, Gran Claustro 2016 was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Finally, this Reserva red wine was aged for a further 24 months in the bottle.

Decant this red wine from L'Empordà at least 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Gran Claustro is deep purple with some violet reflections.

Nose

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Samsó opens tight. After some time, it suggests some smokey and toasted nuances, aromas of ripe red and black fruit, a panoply of Eastern spices, and some hints of chocolate, fine leather and flowers.

Palate

Bold and luscious, this red wine from Castillo de Perelada conveys some expressive notes of jammy red and black fruit, alongside touches of liquorice, bitter chocolate, flowers and notes of cedar, cinnamon, vanilla and clove. First-class acidity, ripe tannins and very long finish with a deeply mineral and earthy aftertaste.

Our personal opinion

A wine that should evolve nicely in the bottle, Gran Claustro 2016 manages to fuse refinement and rusticity in a most interesting way. This wine will be an excellent match for hearty meat recipes.

This is an imposing wine of great classicism and flawless craftmanship. The Emporda terroir adds a further layer of complexity in the form of an earthy-mineral element.

I've drunk each and every vintage of this wine for the last ten years or so. It simply goes from strength to strength.
