Red Wine Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2001
Availability: Out of stock
When considering if this Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is worth a buy, just ask yourself this question: Nowadays, how many wineries in the world have the patience, the means and the courage to release a wine 20 years after the harvest of the grapes?
The answer is: very few. Well, López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia from Rioja is one of them.
This world-class Spanish red wine is crafted mostly from Tempranillo, with a lesser amount of Grenache and a 10% of Graciano and Mazuela, all coming from estate vineyards.
The vineyards are cultivated with minimal intervention techniques and wise-old traditional methods by the winery.
After a meticulous harvest, the grapes were carefully vinified and aged for 10 years in barrels, with two manual rackings performed per year. Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2001 was then clarified with egg whites and aged for 10 more years in its bottle before its commercial release onto the market.
We suggest that you gently decant this Gran Reserva red wine at least 2 hours before drinking.
This vintage got a score of Parker 98, one of the all-time highest.
Appearance | The red wine Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is medium ruby red with brick red edges and maroon glints. |
---|---|
Nose | Elegant and bold aromas that are very pleasant and surprisingly fresh. This blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuela and Graciano exhibits some prominent notes of ripe red fruit, a panoply of spicy aromas and toasted notes, and some enticing balsamic notions. There is also a sweet and persistent vanilla perfume. |
Palate | Long and elegant, this wine from R. López de Heredia - Viña Tondonia is dry, pure and linear, not in the least sweet. Mature and alive, with a remarkable balance. Texture is phenomenal: suave, smooth. Fruit and toasted notes are very flavorful and appear intertwined with sweet spices, leather, tobacco and coffee. In the background, some remembrances of green tea leaves, earth and mineral insinuate. Well integrated tannins and a complex, neverending finish. |
Our personal opinion | A timeless Rioja, Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2001 is simply unforgettable. |
