Bodegas Ponce
Taking La Manchuela to the world.
Founded in 2005, Bodegas Ponce is located in Villanueva de la Jara, province of Cuenca, DO Manchuela, a little-known wine region in the Spanish meseta - the interior plateau of the Iberian Peninsula - at roughly 700 metres above sea level.
Headed by winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce, the family winery Bodegas Ponce embodies like few others the “new wave” of Spanish wine, a group of terroir-focused and quality-oriented producers that emerged in the early XXIst century and firmly positioned the country as one of the world’s top producers of quality wine.
A proud defender of its heritage, Bodegas Ponce winery cultivates only local grapes, the most important of which is Bobal, a tannic and structured red variety that, in the hands of Mr. Ponce, produces an amazing variety of drinkable and expressive wines. The winery also grows the red varieties Monastrell, Grenache and the very rare Moravia Agria. The main white variety is the indigenous Albilla de Manchuela.
The vineyards of Bodegas Ponce occupy around 70 hectares, most of them planted with old vines, some of which are certified organic. The area has a Continental climate with a Mediterranean influence, with clay-limestone, limestone, granitic and cobbled soils.
All wines of Bodegas Ponce winery undergo a whole-cluster vinification in big oak vats and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The portfolio of red wines comprises several Bobal wines, as well as varietal wines made from Monastrell, Grenache and Moravia Agria. The white wines are made from Albilla de Manchuela.
