Casa Castillo
The winery that put the DO Jumilla on the map.
The history of bodega Casa Castillo began in 1942, when Mr. José Sánchez-Cerezo bought the Casa Castillo estate – then basically dedicated to producing rosemary and esparto grass – and planted the first vineyards. A second round of vineyard plantation followed in 1960. During that period, the production of grapes was sold in its entirety to local producers.
In 1991, Nemesio Vicente, José Sánchez-Cerezo’s son-in-law, had the idea of recovering the old winemaking facility to make wine from estate-grown grapes. Nowadays, the Casa Castillo winery is owned and managed by Nemesio’s son, José María Vicente, who, after decades of hard work, achieved what most people in Spain considered impossible: to make world-class wines in DO Jumilla, a region with a long and undistinguished history of bulk wine production.
Bodega Casa Castillo is arguably Spain’s prime exponent of the Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) grape, one of the most important varieties of the Mediterranean area. Besides Monastrell - which occupies the majority of the 170 hectares of estate vineyards - the winery also grows Grenache and Syrah.
The estate vineyards of the Casa Castillo winery are plated at 700 metres above sea level, on the north- oriented slopes of the El Molar mountain range. The area has a very dry climate, with almost 4,000 sun hours per year and huge temperature differences between daytime and nighttime. The estate is certified organic.
The red wines of Casa Castillo show the strong and multifaceted personality of the mighty Monastrell variety. Either vinified as varietal wines or blended with a small percentage of Grenache, they are a paragon of Mediterranean elegance, intensity and finesse. The winery made history when the 2020 vintage of Casa Castillo Pie Franco, its flagship wine, got a 100 Parker-point score.
