The wine Casa Castillo Pie Franco represents a milestone in the history of Spanish red wine. Crafted by José María Vicente, owner and chief winemaker of bodega Casa Castillo, this red wine from DO Jumilla was the first in the region – and, to this day, the only one - to get a 100-point Parker score (2020 vintage).
This varietal Monastrell is sourced from Pago La Solana, a low-yielding, south-oriented vineyard planted in 1941 in sandy soils with some gravel and limestone. The ungrafted vines have ridiculously low yields – production is below 1,000 kg of grapes per hectare.
The grapes were hand-picked and partially destemmed before fermenting in underground vats with wild yeasts under controlled temperature. The malolactic fermentation of this Crianza red wine was carried out in 500-litre French oak barrels, after which it was aged for 16 months in the barrels and in 5,000-litre oak vats..
Bottled in June 2024, the red wine Casa Castillo Pie Franco 2022 from DO Jumilla was stored in the cellar for 12 months minimum before being released onto the market.
It is of the essence to decant this single vineyard red wine at least 2 hours before drinking.
Production around 4,000 bottles.
Appearance | The red wine Casa Castillo Pie Franco is medium purple with a cherry-coloured rim. |

Nose | Complexity, richness and subtlety go hand in hand in this old vines Monastrell. The solid core of ripe black fruit - blackberries, black currants and boysenberries – is underpinned by some earthy and rocky notes, with hints of orange peel, thyme and lavender, evolving into exotic spices, dark chocolate, smoke and wild flowers. |
Palate | This wine of Casa Castillo winery has the light and the allure of the Mediterranean, but conveyed with the elegance and finesse usually associated with the finest Atlantic wines. Precise and intricate, with a rock-solid acidity, a seamless tannic structure and a velvety mouthfeel, ending with a memorable terroir remembrance, misterious and ever-evolving. |
Our personal opinion | The wine Casa Castillo Pie Franco 2022 is one of the world’s best Monastrell wines – on a par with legends such as, say, Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage to Jacques Perrin. |
