The wine Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas is one of the top-shelf bottles of bodega Casa Castillo, a famed winery from DO Jumilla run by winemaker José María Vicente.
An homage to Nemesio Vicente, founder of the winery and father of José María’s, this varietal Spanish red wine is sourced from low-yielding Monastrell vines planted in 1981 in the highest area of Las Gravas, a certified organic vineyard with sandy-gravel soils sitting at 700+ metres of altitude.
The grapes were hand-picked in late September and then fermented in underground vats with native yeasts. After that, this red wine from Jumilla was transferred into 500-litre French oak barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation.
After that, the red wine Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2021 was aged for 19 months in the barrels. Bottled in July 2023, it was stored for 18 months in the cellar before hitting the market.
Decant at least 2 hours before drinking.
2.700 bottles produced.
Appearance | The wine Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas is deep purple with some cherry-coloured reflections. |
---|---|
Nose | Textured and terroir-transparent, this varietal Monastrell carries ripe black cherries, esparto grass, violets and aromatic herbs. There is some spicy richness and a vibrant chalky undercurrent, with overtones of cocoa, mint, tobacco and smoke. |
Palate | Despite its remarkable natural concentration and depth, this wine of the Casa Castillo winery comes across as balanced and very fresh, with a lifted mid palate, powdery tannins, a chalky acidity and great overall elegance, ending with a note of Mediterranean garrigue worthy of the finest Châteauneuf du Pape. |
Our personal opinion | The wine Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2021 is a world-class Monastrell with many good years ahead of it. |
