Celler Frisach

Celler Frisach

Defiant tradition from Terra Alta.

Bodega Celler Frisach was founded in 2009 by Joan and Francesc Ferré Frisach, the descendants of a
grape growing family that has lived for more than two centuries in the village of Corbera d'Ebre, in the
southern Catalan province of Tarragona, DO Terra Alta. The area has a deep historical significance for
Spaniards, as it was the site of one of the most decisive and bloody battles of the Spanish Civil War.

Covering a surface area of 40 hectares, the vineyards of Celler Frisach are located on the outskirts of
Corbera. Certified organic, they are divided into the following parcels: Finca Quart, Finca, Creveta, Vall de Canelles, Finca Trufes, Finca La Serra, Finca Dellà del Riu and Mas del Surdo. They have clay-limestone soils, clay-limestone soils with rocks, loam and limestone soils and panal soils (a type of fossilized dunes that is characteristic of the Terra Alta region).

An unashamedly local wine project – as illustrated by the Frisach – Territori Vernatxa emblem attached
to each and every bottle - bodega Celler Frisach grows solely the local varieties of the region, most
notably Grenache (Vernatxa, in local parlance), in its four strains: Grenache, White Grenache, Grey
Grenache and Hairy Grenache. The rest is planted with old vines Carignan.

To further underscore the indigenous character of the wines, the Celler Frisach winery has recovered
time-honoured techniques like the so-called vi brisat, a type of skin-contact white wine that is very
similar to what is currenly known as an orange wine. The wines by Celler Frisach typically go through a
full-cluster vinification in concrete diposits and are not aged in wood containers - when they are, it is
always in old wood. The wines resulting from this unorthodox approach are stimulating and refreshingly
unconventional, as exemplified by L'Anit de Frisach, a varietal old vines Carignan fermented and aged in
concrete diposits, and Les Alifares, an electric, saline brisat or orange wine made from the rare Grey
Grenache variety.
