Valderiz
A biodynamically oriented family project in Ribera del Duero.
The project of Bodegas Valderiz, owned by the Esteban Cristóbal family, began in 1980, when Tomás Esteban, the heir of a lineage of winegrowers from Roa, Burgos, took charge of the family vineyards. First he sold the grapes to the wineries in the area. Then, in the late XXth century, he founded Bodegas Valderiz winery to produce wines under the DO Ribera del Duero label.
From the start, Tomás embarked on a process of qualiy improvement, dramatically reducing yields and planting new vineyards, the sum total of which, added to the 10 hectares inherited from his father, is 100 hectares. Divided into 45 small parcels with cobblestone, clay and limestone soils, the vineyards of Bodegas Valderiz winery are planted with Tinta del País, the flagship variety of the region, with a small extension of the white variety Albillo Mayor. The area has a Mediterranean climate with a strong Continental influence. Winters are very cold, summers are hot and dry, an average yearly precipitation is around 450 mm.
It is worth mentioning that all the vineyards are certified organic, and that vineyard management follows biodynamic principles. As regards winemaking and élevage, the wines of Bodegas Valderiz go through long fermentations, mild extractions and very gentle macerations, which are carried out in stainless steel tanks, concrete diposits and big wooden containers, the last two being rather uncommon in Ribera del Duero. The winery uses no oenological additives, and adds a very small fraction of sulfites to the wines.
