Viña Salceda

The rebranding of a traditional producer.

Founded in 1969, bodega Viña Salceda is situated in Elciego, in the heart of La Rioja Alavesa. After half a century producing run-of-the-mill Rioja wines, in 2023 the then newly appointed winemaker David González Marcos redefined the company's overall approach to wine production and reestructured the product portfolio. His aim was to shift the company's focus from generic to terroir-oriented wines, capable of conveying the character of some of Rioja's most prestigious lieux-dits.

Spread across several subzones of DOCa Rioja, the vineyards of bodega Viña Salceda are tended applying sustainable techniques and following the tenets of regenerative viticulture. The parcels closest to the Viña Salceda headquarters are in close proximity to the Ebro river, at 410 to 540 metres of altitude, in an area with clay-limestone soils and a sandstone subsoil. Northwest of Elciego, in the La Sonsierra area, the winery grows 25 hectares of Tempranillo, Graciano and Viura, 5 to 100+ years of age, planted in poor soils with a high limestone content. Southwest of Elciego, in the Alto Najerilla area, at 600 to 700 metres of altitude, there are 3 hectares of Grenache, Viura and Tempanillo vines, 40 to 110 years old, grown in clay-rich soils.

Besides upgrading the traditional range of Viña Salceda wines, like Viña Salceda Crianza and Viña Salceda Reserva, winemaker González Marcos added to the portfolio a white wine and a collection of terroir-driven wines called Gama Parajes. Named after the highest peak in La Sonsierra, the red wine Pico Palomares is a nice example of the brand's new identity. The company, which was bought in 2017 by Grupo Perelada, makes 700,000 bottles per year.
