The wine Verónica Ortega Cobrana is one of Verónica Ortega’s most personal creations. For those unfamiliar with her name, let's just say that the wines of the Andalusian-born winemaker – based in El Bierzo since 2010 - are every bit as compelling as those made by local superstars Raúl Pérez and Álvaro Palacios.
This Vino de Villa de Congosto is sourced from a 100+-year-old vineyard with blue slate and red clay soils sitting at 750 metres of altitude, in the northern part of the DO Bierzo. A field blend, the centenary vineyard is planted with Mencía and a 25% shared by Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino, Alicante Bouschet and Estaladiña.
The varieties went through a whole-cluster co-fermentation in a truncated cone-shaped, 5000-litre open wooden vat, with a long and gentle maceration to delicately extract tannin and colour. After that, this Crianza red wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and clay amphorae. The red wine Verónica Ortega Cobrana 2022 was bottled and stored for 12+ months before hitting the shelves.
We suggest aerating this red wine from El Bierzo before drinking.

| Appearance | The red wine Verónica Ortega Cobrana is medium ruby with a purplish hue on the rim. |
|---|---|
| Nose | Complex and ever-evolving, with a mineral and earthy depth to the sour red cherry fruit. This blend of Mencía, Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino, Alicante Bouschet and Estaladiña carries white pepper, fresh mint, spices and a damp earth, mushroom-y note, with a dash of tobacco and wild flowers. |
| Palate | Poised and richly layered, with pitch-perfect acidity, impressive focus and balance, a smooth mid palate and a mineral-earthy side to the crunchy red fruit. This wine by Verónica Ortega has a very long finish reminiscent of flowers and spices. |
| Our personal opinion | The wine Verónica Ortega Cobrana 2022 proves that the Bierzo terroir is absolutely world-class. |
