Rendé Masdéu

Rendé Masdéu

A family winery from Conca de Barberà reborn from its ashes.

The origins of the Rendé Masdéu winery are inextricably linked to Mr. Josep M. Rendé Ventosa, an agronomy technician from the village of L’Espluga de Francolí who, from 1905 onwards, played an important role in the development of the agricultural cooperative movement in the Tarragona region. In 1991, his descendants Josep M.ª and Joan Rendé started to bottle and sell the wines made from the family vineyards under a commercial name. In 1994, Mariona Rendé and her husband Jordi Puig took charge of the company. Guillem Puig, the brother of Jordi Puig’s and an oenologist by training, was appointed technical director. In that capacity, he supervised the transition of the winery to organic agriculture, which was successfully completed in the year 2010.

In 2019, a swelling of the Francolí river completely destroyed the main building of bodega Rendé Masdéu. The disaster elicited a spontaneous and unprecedented wave of solidarity, not only from the local population, but from people all around Catalonia. Thanks to the collaboration of many anonymous volunteers and to the initiative of a group of wineries that launched a solidarity wine project to collect funds, the new facility of the Rendé Masdéu winery was fully operational in the summer of 2020, just in time to process the grapes of the 2020 vintage.

The wines of the Rendé Masdéu winery are sourced from 15 hectares of vineyards in which old and young vines coexist. Certified organic since 2010, the vineyards are planted at different altitudes near the protected natural space of Muntanyes de Prades, in the vicinity of L'Espluga de Francolí, a village in DO Conca de Barberà. The flagship variety is Trepat, a red grape indigenous to the Conca de Barberà region. The winery also grows Garrut (Monastrell), Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The main white varieties are Parellada, Macabeo and White Grenache.

The grapes are vinified in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with stainless steel tanks, concrete diposits and oak barrels. The Rendé Masdéu wines mature in 500-litre French oak barrels, 2,000-litre vats and clay vessels, which are used for the Trepat wines. The aging room is located in an old wine cave from the XIVth century, which has constant temperature and appropriate humidity conditions throughout the year.
