Rodrigo Méndez

Rodrigo Méndez

A personal vision of Rías Baixas.

Located in the village of Meaño, in the Galician province of Pontevedra, bodega Rodrigo Méndez was founded in 2011 by winemaker Rodrigo Méndez with the aim of conveying his personal vision of the DO Rías Baixas, a region that holds no secrets for him. Up to then, Rodrigo had worked at the family winery, Forjas del Salnés, known for making crisp Atlantic wines with a mouthwatering acidity and a saline character.

The scion of a local winegrower family – his great grandfather planted the first vines in Meaño in the year 1912 – Rodrigo Méndez has worked hard to recover long-forgotten native grapes, most notably the indigenous red varieties of Rías Baixas. Interestingly, those varieties occupied most of the vineyard surface of the region before Albariño cultivation became predominant.

The wines of the Rodrigo Méndez winery are sourced from family vineyards, some of which, like the said Albariño parcels with sandy-granitic soils planted by Rodrigo's great grandfather, are over 100 years old. Besides making several expressions of the flagship variety of DO Rías Baixas, Rodrigo Méndez winery makes Galician red wines from the local varieties Caíño Tinto and Espadeiro, and a sophisticated varietal Pinot Noir from vineyards located close to the sea. Crisp, fresh and energetic, the wines of Rodrigo Méndez enjoy a great reputation among senior wine critics and demanding aficionados all over the world.

Besides his personal project, Rodrigo Méndez does frequent collabs with top-notch Spanish winemakers, like the one and only Raúl Pérez.
