Details

Founded by Mr. Joan Marrugat, Plana d’en Jan is a garage winery from Penedès that produces small-batch wines from exceptional plots. One of its best bottlings is the white wine Plana d’en Jan Tres Àmfores, sourced from a single Macabeo vineyard planted with an old, high-quality, low-vigour clone of the variety.

The 0.74 hectare plot is located within the Mas d’en Benet estate, which has been owned by the Marrugat family for three generations. The vineyard is farmed with minimal intervention techniques, using cover crops to preserve humidity and keep the microbial lives of the soil alive.

Hand-picked and carefully selected, the grapes were fully destemmed and macerated with the skins at 10ºC for 60 hours. After that, this Spanish white wine commenced alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and completed the process in 50 and 300 litre amphorae made from three kinds of clay, each with a different degree of mineralization.

After completing the process, the white wine Plana d’en Jan Tres Àmfores 2018 was aged for 4 months in the amphorae.

Finally, this white wine from Penedès was bottled and kept in the cellar for some years before hitting the market.

The production of this one-of-a-kind white wine fermented and aged in amphorae is ridiculously low: less than 500 bottles.

Appearance

The white wine Plana d’en Jan Tres Àmfores is deep yellow with some amber-coloured reflections.

Nose

This varietal Macabeo is complex and characteristic. Nice aromatics of conference pear, golden delicious and ripe peaches, with a dash of Mediterranean herbs – rosemary, thyme, tarragon – some saltiness and a hint of flowers and aniseed.

Palate

Again, this wine of bodega Plana d’en Jan is salty and earthy, with remarkable focus and precision, a compelling Mediterranean exuberance and a vibrant mid palate. This white wine aged in clay amphorae has slight citrusy and bitter note to the finish providing good freshness.

Our personal opinion

Adventurous and difficult-to-please drinkers should definitely try the wine Plana d’en Jan Tres Àmfores 2018.
