Details

The red wine Es Lo Que Hay is a savoury expression of the old vine Grenache from Aragón made by our favourite Scotsman, Norrel Robertson MW, through his project in the DO Calatayud, bodega El Escocés Volante.

Virtually a varietal Grenache, this Spanish red wine is complemented with a dollop of other local varieties, like Moristel, Miguel del Arco and Provechón. The grapes are sourced from several parcels with slate soils rich in quartz, planted in 1947 and 1961 at altitudes from 750 to 1,100 metres.

The hand-harvested grapes were cold-soaked before going through a partial whole-cluster fermentation in concrete diposits. After finishing the malolactic fermentation, this red wine from Calatayud was aged for about 12 months in the diposits and in Flextank eggs.

The red wine Es Lo Que Hay 2022 was bottled after a gentle filtration.

Limited production.

We suggest aerating this Crianza red wine before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Es Lo Que Hay is deep ruby with some cherry-coloured reflections.

Nose

This old vine Grenache nuanced with a droplet of other local varieties is judiciously ripe and pleasantly intense, boasting a rocky and metallic note from the slate soils, savoury notes of ripe blueberries and blackberries and hints of wild herbs and flowers.

Palate

Balanced and quite deep, this wine by El Escocés Volante winery has the freshness of a high-altitude wine, a tapering acidity effortlessly carrying its weight, ripe tannins and a mineral vibrancy to the savoury black fruit, ending with a note of mountain herbs.

Our personal opinion

The wine Es Lo Que Hay 2022 is a no-nonsense, super-tasty Grenache.
