Availability: In stock
The red wine Manda Huevos Caña Andrea Tinto is a fine specimen of the old-vines Grenache from Aragón, crafted by Scotsman Norrel Robertson MW, owner and winemaker of bodega El Escocés Volante from DO Calatayud.
This Spanish red wine is sourced from two parcels, less than 1 hectare each. The first, Caña Andrea arriba, was planted in 1908 in red clay, pudding stone and limestone soils at 750 metres of altitude. The main variety is Grenache (80-85%), and the other local varieties are Moristel, Bobal and White Grenache. The second parcel, Caña Andrea abajo, was planted with Grenache vines in 1970 at 730 metres of altitude.
The grapes went through a 20% whole-cluster vinification in open top diposits, with mild punch-downs of the solid cap. After that, this red wine from Aragón – sold under the Vino de España designation – completed the malo and was pressed to Flextank eggs and an old 650-litre French oak barrel, where it was aged on lees for 14 months.
Once blended, the red wine Manda Huevos Caña Andrea Tinto 2021 was transferred into concrete deposits for assemblage. This Crianza red wine was bottled on April 4th, 2023.
3,090 bottles produced.
| Appearance | The red wine Manda Huevos Caña Andrea Tinto is medium purple with some deep ruby reflections. |
|---|---|
| Nose | Balanced and expressive, this old-vines Grenache with other local varieties suggests crunchy red berries with a citrusy and herbal edge, some spicy intimations and a splash of wild flowers. |
| Palate | Medium to full-bodied, this wine by El Escocés Volante winery shows a judicious use of oak, with a round mouthfeel and some plush tannins. There is a salty tension and a lively mineral undercurrent, suggesting crushed rocks and ending with remembrances of lavender, elderberry and red fruit. |
| Our personal opinion | The wine Manda Huevos Caña Andrea Tinto 2021 is a great example of Aragonese Grenache's endless riches. The list goes on. |
